Southern Belle
Southern hospitality and the manners of the Old South are alive and well in the Modern South.
Experience the South’s gentility and less frenetic pace of life, enjoy patterns of speech which
are more melodic, and attitudes which are more relaxed. See remnants of the Old South at Boone Hall
and Middleton Place Plantations. Then top off your trip with three nights in charming Charleston,
where you may shop for antiques and collectibles in Charleston's renowned King Street.
Make your individual arrival into Savannah. Meet your group early this evening for a
get-acquainted reception, followed by an introduction to historic Savannah on a nostalgic carriage tour
featuring moss-laden trees, beautiful antebellum homes, and monuments and museums dating back some 260 years.
Your hotel is one of Savannah's most beautiful and historic, located in the heart of the Landmark Historic
District. MARSHALL HOUSE Reception
You have until the mid-afternoon free to shop and sightsee on your own in Savannah. Discover the
city's exquisite ironwork, ancient cobblestones and brick streets, splendid mansions and picturesque cottages.
Walk to the City Market, or along the city's historic waterfront-River Street, where some of Savannah's finest
stores are located. Continue past the Cotton Exchange to the Waving Girl Statue. Alternatively, you might decide
to head off in the opposite direction toward Forsyth Park, one of Savannah's twenty-two city squares. The city
also hosts some of the finest private urban gardens in the country and every spring becomes a pilgrimage destination
for gardeners who come to admire the virtual riot of color of blooming azaleas, camellias and magnolias. Rejoin your
group in the later afternoon for a progressive dinner tour through the Historic District. Travel aboard a trolley,
stopping at three private, historic homes-those of Julliet Gordon Lowe, Artists House & the 1790 Historic Inn
Restaurant-for an invitation inside to hear the stories, to inspect the houses and to sample local dishes. Then the
Trolley takes you to the Historic Savannah Theatre to attend a performance of Lost in the 50's, a retrospective look
at a decade when the music was boppin.' The trolley returns you to your hotel. MARSHALL HOUSE Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast, drive to Charleston, stopping for a walking tour of historic Beaufort, a charming southern town with
numerous interesting antebellum homes. You have time for lunch on your own in Beaufort before you continue to Charleston.
Upon arrival, take a walking tour of the historic area of Charleston with local a guide. You then have the evening at
leisure to have dinner and explore on your own. Certainly you should leave room to sample a tangy southern specialty
dessert-key lime pie. KINGS COURTYARD INN Breakfast
Today, visit two famous 18th-century plantations. Begin with Boone Hall Plantation, originally built in the mid
18th-century and rebuilt in 1935 with materials salvaged from the original home. The house is a southern planter's
manor where hostesses interpret antebellum life and customs as they describe furnishings and household accessories
of the past three centuries, all reflecting the southern planter's way of life. Once a cotton plantation, Boone Hall
has nine original slave cabins. Walk along the famous Avenue of Oaks framing the approach to the home, where massive,
moss-draped branches meet overhead, forming a natural cathedral nave. Visit the gift shop that was once the old cotton gin.
Take a coach trip into the still-working plantation grounds to learn about its historic uses, about salt marshes and about
bird life in the area. This opportunity is an event not open to individual visitors. This afternoon at Middleton Place,
wander through America's oldest landscaped gardens. Begun by Henry Middleton in 1741, they reflect the grand classic style
that was in vogue in Europe at that time. Following the principles of Andre le Notre, the designer who laid out the gardens
at the Palace of Versailles, Middleton paid attention to woods and water. Rational order, geometry and balance, and points
of surprise were all parts of this garden's design. While visiting the plantation, learn about the role four generations of
the Middleton family played in America's history from 1741 through the Civil War. Return to hotel in time for dinner on your
own in Charleston. This evening, you might consider an optional cruise on the river, or stop in and listen to local music
at one of the local pubs. KINGS COURYARD INN Breakfast
With the full free day in Charleston for your own pursuits, you might consider scheduling a spa treatment, shopping or
visiting one of the city's many art galleries, a day trip to see the barrier islands, a day cruise through the salt marshes,
or a visit to one of the beach resorts for a relaxing day in the sun. With 20 championship courses and 360 holes of golf
in the area, maybe a memorable day on the links is in store for you. This evening, celebrate with fellow travelers at your
farewell dinner at Circa 1886 at the Wentworth Mansion. The menu is traditional Southern fare with a contemporary twist that
reflects the historic atmosphere of this lively restaurant. KINGS COURTYARD INN Breakfast, Dinner
